Winter Skin Care Tips to Keep You Glowing
The cold, dry winter air can wreak havoc on your skin, taking moisture away and leaving your skin chapped, red, itchy and dry. Consider these tips to ensure your skin stays soft, supple and healthy during the winter months.
Kick Up the Moisturizer
Your skin needs more moisture in the wintertime to compensate for harsh weather conditions. Oil-based moisturizers are best during the cold months because they provide a layer of protection not found in water-based products. Look for non-clogging oil-based moisturizers like mineral oil, primrose oil or almond oil. And when the air is dry, remember to apply moisturizer immediately after you wash to help retain moisture and soothe your dry, itchy skin.
Use a Humidifier
When the furnace or space heater comes on, they emit hot, dry air into the environment, which dries out your skin. Combat this drying effect by hooking up a humidifier, which can put moisture back into the air and protect your skin from becoming dry. To disperse moisture evenly, consider placing small humidifiers in different parts of your home or office.
Water is essential for your overall health, but in the winter months we tend to drink less of it. Hot drinks like cocoa or tea seem more preferable. Try warm water with lemon as a refresher instead. And remember that foods in high water content can also help your skin stay hydrated. Watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, kiwi, oranges, celery, tomatoes and cucumbers are great options.
Bathe In Lukewarm Water
When it’s cold outside, the idea of soaking in a steaming hot bath can sound like heaven. But when you expose your skin to the intense heat of a hot shower or bath, your skin pays the price. Hot water strips many oils from your skin and leads to loss of moisture. Instead, soak in a lukewarm bath to preserve the lipid barriers of your skin and retain more moisture.

Get the Skinny on KYBELLA™
Double chin got you down? You’re not alone. For many men and women, the extra skin in the under-chin neck area can cause self-consciousness when it comes to their appearance, which can take its toll on your self-esteem and confidence level. The good news is there is treatment that can help eliminate the double chin – KYBELLA™, a prescription medicine that helps dissolve fat and reabsorb it back into the body. What’s more, it’s a viable alternative to surgery or liposuction.
How does KYBELLA™ work?
Recommended for people with mild to moderate double chins, KYBELLA™ works by being injected into the fat below the chin, destroying fat cells which are then reabsorbed by the body. A topical anesthetic helps to reduce discomfort. Typically the initial KYBELLA™ treatment takes about 30 minutes with subsequent treatments taking from 15 to 20 minutes. The secondary treatments generally take place one month apart. Unlike liposuction or surgery, KYBELLA™ treatments result in less bruising and down time.
What are the side effects?
KYBELLA™ is safe and effective. As with any procedure, there are possible side effects involved with KYBELLA™ treatment which may include trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw. The most common side effects can include bruising, swelling, numbing, pain, redness, and small, firm areas around the injection sites. These will resolve themselves over time.
How soon will I see results?
Many people see results in two to four treatments. Patients with a severe, full neck may need six treatments before they see results.
It can be frustrating to have excess fat under your chin, especially when it seems resistant to diet and exercise. You may feel as if you have no options but to live with it. Chin up! If you’re looking to eliminate this bothersome facial feature but don’t want to undergo cosmetic surgery, KYBELLA™ could be the effective treatment you’ve been looking for.

Erase the Chemical Peel Confusion
Chemical peel is a term that can sound intimidating, if you’re used to conventional facial treatments. Some potential customers are often overwhelmed when introduced to these procedures, thinking that peels require harsh chemicals.
However, there is nothing to worry about with the right knowledge about chemical peeling. Thanks to technological advancement, this facial rejuvenation approach helps improve the skin of the patient through exfoliation and peeling after application.
Common Types of Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use different chemicals to address various common facial skin problems, including wrinkles and acne. To help you understand chemical peels, here’s some background on different types of chemical peels. You’ll be able to get an idea of which ones might work for you.
- Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) – These acids come from mild organic acids like fruit, sugar cane, and milk. AHA peels don’t require downtime and only cause the smallest irritations. This solution encourages old skin to slough off, leaving an improved skin tone and improving the appearance of acne scares, fine lines, and dark spots.
- Beta hydroxyl acid (BHA) – This is also popularly known as salicylic acid, which treats similar conditions to that of AHAs. BHA, however, penetrates the skin more deeply. It comes from wintergreen leaves and birch bark, which can also be used to treat skin issues including warts, acne, and psoriasis. BHA can also be a great treatment for patients with sensitive or acne-prone skin, due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects.
- Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) – This is a type of chemical peel used in medium-level peeling that can get rid of some types or warts and treat skin discolorations and imperfections. You should only get this from a specially trained doctor, and individuals with a dark complexion need to be particularly cautions, as they have a risk of hyper pigmentation with TCA treatment.
Done by the right professional, chemical peels can be very effective and safe. Find a the right doctor and get ready for a refreshed, glowing skin!
Leave the Spiders to the Movies, Not Your Legs
As we age, we all have them — those small red, purple, and blue blood vessels that show through the skin on our legs, chest, and face. Their name comes from their twisting, turning paths — spider veins. And, while spiders make good fodder for comic books and movies, even Peter Parker will want to get rid of his spider veins when he gets a little older.
Fortunately for you, Dr. Reichel is well versed in schlerotherapy, a fancy word for the treatment and ultimate removal of spider veins. The treatment will let you show off your legs again and lighten your makeup needs on your face.
What contributes to the development of spider veins?
There are a variety of factors that contribute to a person developing spider veins:
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause
- Occupations that require a good deal of standing
- Use of birth control pills
- A history of blood clots
- Tight clothing around the abdomen
Treating spider veins
The standard approach to treating spider veins hasn’t changed since the 1930s. High-concentration salt solution (Dr. Reichel also uses Asclera) is injected directly into the targeted spider vein. This sclerosing solution irritates the lining of the veins, causing them to close off and turn into scar tissue. This eventually fades away and the vein is no longer visible. The procedure is fast, but usually requires from two to four treatments to remove the veins you seek to eliminate. Dr. Reichel also has her patients wear compression stockings for 24 hours after a schlerotherapy session.

Excessive Sweating – Treatment and Management
Heavy sweating is also known as hyperhidrosis and is indeed an embarrassing and real problem for many. However, the good news is that there are effective ways of treating this rare condition that may cause excessive sweating on the face, genital area, armpits, feet, hands or on the entire body. What is the actual cause of excessive sweating is not known yet, but it has been found that it is hereditary in nature and starts during one's childhood itself. Patients who suffer from this condition sweat either in certain areas or all over their bodies. The skin may become wrinkled, white, and get irritated or red as there is a constant problem of moisture and may even develop a bad odor. Patients may often feel self-conscious and awkward while attending a social event.
A few things to know
Treatment for controlling excessive sweating: There are various treatment options to cure you of hyperhidrosis. Botox injections can be given in your armpits so that the nerves that are producing the sweat can be blocked. This technique can treat excessive sweating for up to 8 months for each injection given. On the other hand, a permanent solution can be the use of Ultherapy for the treatment of hyperhidrosis. An ultrasonic energy is used for destroying the activity of the sweat gland as a part of this procedure. Focused sound waves are used for targeting the depth of your skin that is the location of your sweat glands.
- Managing excessive sweating: Many people suffer from the problem of excessive sweating but fail to realize that they have a medical condition that needs to be treated. If you are one of those people who sweat excessively, you should consult a dermatologist immediately to treat hyperhidrosis. A dermatologist is an ideal person who can educate you about the type of hyperhidrosis you are suffering from and can advise for appropriate treatment.
