Botox or Filler for wrinkles?

Q: How do I know if I need Botox or filler for the wrinkles on my face? –S

Dear S,

That is a great question.  Most people know that Botox and fillers are products that can be used to treat facial wrinkles, but many people are unaware of their differences and which product would be best for them.

Let’s start with Botox.  Botox is a protein that is injected directly into the target muscle and it temporarily blocks the transmission of nerve impulses to the muscle; therefore, blocking muscle movement.  This is helpful for what we call “dynamic” wrinkles, or wrinkles produced by movement.  Botox is used cosmetically in small amounts for wrinkles, and it is used in larger amounts to treat other conditions such as muscle movement disorders, sweating, and migraines.  It is important to see a qualified health professional for your Botox treatment, and we offer this service for wrinkles and sweating at our new clinic in Renton, WA.

Next we have fillers.  Fillers are injectable gels that are placed under deeper facial wrinkles and areas of volume loss.  These products are used to treat wrinkles at rest, and unlike Botox, do not affect facial muscle movement.  The fillers come in many different preparations, but are all similar in that they are made from natural body substances, and are absorbed slowly over time by the body.  Depending on the filler type they can last from six months up to two years.  Visit our clinic in Renton Dermatology clinic to see what filler would be right for you!
