Megan, I am a 34 year old female and have recently been diagnosed with hidradenitis suppurativa. Can laser hair removal help with my condition? -E
Thank you for asking Megan Larson, one of our wonderful PA-C’s at Pacific Dermatology & Cosmetic Center in Renton about Hidradenitis Supurativa and laser hair removal.
Here is Megan’s answer:
Yes, laser hair removal can be helpful for many patients with this condition. We use either Intense Pulse Light (IPL) or the LightSheer Duet Diode laser. It takes a series of treatment sessions, and should be used in combination with other forms of treatments.
Hidradenitis suppurativa, or acne inversa, is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes painful bumps and nodules in areas that rub, like the armpits and groin. This condition affects mostly women between puberty and 40-years-old, and about 1-4% of the population has it. The bumps and nodules can become swollen and painful, can become inflamed and leak pus, and can lead to scarring and disfigurement. As one can imagine, this condition can cause significant psychological distress and can affect people’s self-esteem and the way they interact with others. There are many treatments for hidradenitis suppurativa, and some people are able to attain full clearance while others suffer a more chronic and relapsing course. A few of the treatment options include topical medications, oral medications, injections, surgery, and lasers. At Pacific Dermatology and Cosmetic Center in NorthGate Seattle, or in Renton, we do everything we can to try and help our patients achieve full clearance and maintain it. We tailor our treatment plans to the needs of the individual patient, and will work with them to attain their optimal result.
LightSheer® DUET™ Laser Hair Removal Becoming Go-To Summer Treatment, Reports Dr. Jennifer Reichel
Founder and director of Pacific Dermatology & Cosmetic Center, Dr. Jennifer Reichel, is seeing a growing number of patients “prepping for summer” with laser hair removal.
Prominent dermatologist, Dr. Jennifer Reichel, is seeing a significant new trend at her thriving Seattle practice: more patients choosing laser hair removal for summertime. Utilizing the “gold standard” in permanent hair reduction, Pacific Dermatology & Cosmetic Center offers the cutting-edge LightSheer® DUET™ laser.
“Summer is the time we’re hitting the pool, wearing lighter clothing, and out and about for the world to see,” explains Dr. Reichel. “It’s no surprise that laser hair removal would see such a boom this time of year.” Unlike older hair-removal methods like waxing and depilatories, laser hair removal uses special light energy to permanently reduce hair.
“And, since it is summer, patients are looking to treat areas that will be visible at the pool and the beach,” notes Dr. Reichel. “This includes the underarms, the bikini area and the legs.” Other common sites for laser hair removal include the face, the neck, the arms and the back.
Asked to speculate on the particular popularity of the LightSheer DUET, Dr. Reichel offered a few possibilities. “For one, the DUET uses a special vacuum technology that gently draws the skin into the handpiece, making the procedure more efficient for all skin types,” explains Dr. Reichel. “Moreover, the DUET completely eliminates the need for topical anesthetics and messy gels.”
When asked about the future of laser hair removal, Dr. Reichel was optimistic. “Unwanted hair doesn’t just look unattractive, but it can affect a person’s confidence and self esteem,” explains Dr. Reichel. “Now, we have the technology to remove and permanently reduce that hair quickly, easily and comfortably. I can only predict the LightSheer DUET growing even more popular going forward.”

We have these two amazing products....Latisse for longer lashes & Lightsheer DUET for laser hair removal
I have two issues with my underarms; I don't like having to shave my underarm hair and I sweat excessively. I'd like to have both of these treatments done at the same visit. Is that possible?
Yes you can do the laser hair removal in the same time period as botox for sweating, however I wouldn't do them on the same day. We don't have research data that I know of, but it seems that the inflammation from the laser may cause the botox protein to bind less effectively - which means you could have a reduced response to the botox and need to get treatment for your sweating sooner. So, unless you have other reasons (travel time, or difficulty with 2 separate appointments), I would favor spacing the treatments out by 1-3 weeks. Thank you for your question. Dr. Jennifer Reichel
