Will Cosmetic Procedures Make You Happy?
In most cases, patients who plan on getting cosmetic surgery believe that it will improve the quality of their life and make them happier. While experts agree that patients are known to experience a boost in their self-esteem and self-confidence post-surgery, until recently there had yet to be any scientific documentation to official prove this is true. According to research information offered from experts, science now backs up this claim, declaring that cosmetic surgery can, in fact, make patients feel happier not only with how they look, but in other areas of their life as well.
A study conducted at two European Universities aimed to determine the long-term positive effects of plastic surgery and its effect on happiness. The studies were centered on the question "Does cosmetic surgery increase quality of life?" The researchers looked into facial surgeries specifically, and found that the majority of patients felt significantly better about themselves, their appearance, and experienced more happiness as a result of the surgery.
The researchers found that happiness increased in patients post-surgery because the boost in self-confidence and self-esteem they experienced from the physical modifications of the procedures. When the patient's self-image is improved, his or her quality of life is also improved, as the individual feels more confident in taking the steps needed for a happier life. The study also included those who had cosmetic surgery done, along with those who planned to have the surgery done, but decided not to. The patients who decided to go without the surgery did not experience the boost in happiness that those who had the surgery did.
